Five hush-hush Commercial Cleaning Strategies for Facilities

As a commercial facility manager, you know the importance of keeping your building clean, and it is something that we all go about doing differently. It does not matter where you start cleaning in your facility; the end goal is to have a clean and safe facility for your employees to work in. You might ask yourself how do the professional cleaners do this day in and day out with such ease? Having a clean facility is not about randomly doing the cleaning. Here are five commercial cleaning strategies that the professional cleaners use that will help you to clean your facility more efficiently.

 

1. Did you develop a cleaning strategy?

Professional cleaners do not just wing it. They start with a plan of how they are going to clean and where they are going to start in the facility. When you do not have a plan of how to clean and where to start cleaning, chaos will reign. Things to think about:

  1. What time of day do you have to start cleaning?
  2. What areas of the facility is the busiest?
  3. How large of an area do you have to clean?
  4. Which tasks take the longest?

Think through all of these aspects of your cleaning regiment and make a cleaning plan of where to start and how you are going to clean daily.

 

2. What types of surfaces are you cleaning?

One way to get more efficient at cleaning your facility on a regular basis is to know what types of surfaces that you are going to be cleaning. This is part of your strategizing session for making a plan for cleaning. Make a list of all the different types of surfaces that you have to clean. Once you have that done, put together the different types of cleaning materials and cleaners that you are going to need to get the task done. Things to think about:

  1. Know ahead of time which cleaning solutions to use and the proper way to apply them without damaging the surface you are working on.
  2. Know which cleaning chemicals you can and cannot mix. For example: (don’t mix bleach and ammonia together, it creates chlorine gas that can cause fatal harm.)
  3. Know which cleaning chemicals are acidic or alkaline and how to affect surfaces like natural stone, marble, granite and concrete. (if used wrong, you could damage the surface.)

 

3. Are you cleaning top down or down up?

This may be a simple question but can impact how much time it takes you to clean any part of your facility. Begin at the top (the second floor or higher) of your building. Then work your way down to the bottom floor. When you are in a room, start with dusting these items:

  1. Walls
  2. Tops of picture frames
  3. Tops of shelves
  4. Mirrors
  5. Wall lamps
  6. Mantles

The last item that you dust is the baseboard. By cleaning everything from top to bottom, you allow all of the dust and dirt to fall to the floor. This method stops cross contamination like dust falling onto a desktop that has already been cleaned or carpet that have been vacuumed. The last thing to clean in the room is the floor surface.

 

4. Are you cleaning one at a time?

When you clean only a part of a room throughout your building you increase the amount of time you are wasting by tracking dirt back over the areas you already cleaned. Don’t just clean one part of the room. Pick the furthest point in your building and start with one room. Clean the whole room from top to bottom. Dust, polish, empty the trash, and vacuum your way out of the room. Now that room is completely done. Work your way through the building in this fashion until the whole building is done.

 

5. Are you cleaning back to front?

A good way to clean a room is to start at the farthest point in the room (the back) and work your way to (the front) of the room where you entered. The idea here is to prevent yourself from repeatedly tracking over areas you have already cleaned. Bring all of your supplies with you and work your way to the front of the room. The same concept can be applied to each room and the whole building until it is fully cleaned.

 

These are simple strategies that some professional cleaners use on a regular basis to reduce time in cleaning small or large facilities. Don’t forget plan the route you are going to take when cleaning, stay organized and focused on each room and a section of your building while cleaning. This will help you to achieve your goals whether it is one room or a whole facility.
