Spring is right around the corner. Even though today the weather outside is a cool crisp 15 degrees. Spring is still around the corner and for most homeowners, it is an exciting time to get your home ready.
During the winter months the windows get dirty, dust builds up, carpets get filled with dirt, salt and grime. There are a lot of holidays during the winter and that traffic spreads a lot of dirt around your house too.
The first step in getting your home ready for spring is to make a list of basic home cleaning maintenance tasks that need to be completed. Below are some ideas of what those tasks should be.
Your dishwasher gets used frequently and often has bits of food in the bottom. Clean all of those little bits out of the bottom and run your dishwasher through a cleaning cycle. We recommend doing this at least once per month to prevent buildup.
Over the winter your cabinets will build up dust and grease from cooking and moving about. The face of your cabinets should also be cleaned twice a year. Dirt, germs, grease and oils hands leave stains and germs behind, so wiping them down with vinegar and water is great for removing all of those things mentioned above.
Your appliances like your stove, microwave, toaster and refrigerator get dirty, dingy and greasy over the winter too. It is recommended that you clean these surfaces with a grease-cutting cleaner every other week to keep them looking great.
Windows are often overlooked, but they are the first thing to get dirty. Bad weather leaves dirt and grime on your windows. This leaves them in a darkened state that can affect your mood. The inside of the windows will get dirt too due to your wood stove, cooking stove, pets and people moving about.
Even though you don’t mop your floors every week, you should! Over time hardwood floors lose their finish and dirt can easily get trapped in the floors. Get the mop out and clean them weekly, but after the winter season give them a really good cleaning.
This is another one that often gets overlooked. Your washing machine can get smelly over time. Don’t wash your clothes in there. Disinfect your washing machine with vinegar and baking soda. Run the machine with some hot water, vinegar and baking soda for 30 to 60 minutes. This will get everything loose and get rid of that musty smell.
Take a look at the walls inside your oven. If they are anything like a standard home, you have some splatter and baked-on food stuck in there. Chip off the loose stuff and if you have a self-cleaning oven, run the cleaning mode. If you don’t, mix up some baking soda and vinegar and smear it all over your oven and bake it. This should clean out all that grime.
